Could you spend less on your mobile?

Start with the phone you own, the data you use and the terms of your current plan.

Before looking for a bigger allowance or a new phone, check what you already pay for and use. A few numbers from your account can make the next choice much clearer.

Start with your latest bill

Write down the recurring cost, extra charges, remaining minimum term and any phone repayments. Check three recent months of actual data use. A large allowance has little value if most of it goes unused, but running out and buying extra data can cost more too.

See whether your current phone can stay

If it still does what you need, check its battery and software support. A suitable SIM-only plan may let you keep it longer. Compare a repair quote with replacement cost if the battery or screen is the main problem.

If you do need a replacement, compare the same storage and condition. Include delivery, accessories you actually need and any repair cost. Do not treat a trade-in estimate as guaranteed cash until its conditions are clear.

Check social tariffs if you receive benefits

Some providers offer cheaper phone packages for people claiming benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Eligibility and the available plans vary. Ofcom’s current social tariff list is a useful place to check, even when those offers are not in our comparison.

Make the saving real

A £4 monthly reduction is £48 over 12 calendar-month bills. Subtract any leaving charge, setup cost or other extra before deciding whether switching now makes sense. That arithmetic is an example, not a promised saving.

Remove paid extras you no longer need through your provider’s normal process. Set a reminder before a discount ends or your minimum term finishes. Check that the next plan has suitable coverage and enough data, then use our switching guide if you want to keep your number.

Compare SIM plans or work out your data needs.
