Choose a phone that fits your day

A practical shortlist: size, camera, storage, support and what you can comfortably spend.

Write down two things your current phone does badly and two things you would like to keep. That gives you a better shortlist than simply choosing the newest or most expensive model.

Set the whole budget

Choose a phone budget and a monthly SIM budget. Include a case, charger or repair only if you need one. Compare new and refurbished offers at the same storage size, and use the cost calculator if you are also considering a monthly deal.

Check size with your hands, not just a number

A bigger display can help with reading, maps and video, but the phone may be harder to hold or put in a pocket. Compare its width and weight with the phone you already own. If possible, try reaching the top of the screen and typing one-handed in a shop.

Check text size, screen zoom, voice controls and hearing or vision features that matter to you. A large display is not a substitute for checking whether your own apps are comfortable to use.

Choose cameras for the pictures you take

Think about family indoors, pets in motion, landscapes or distant subjects. Look at sample pictures and independent reviews for those situations. A megapixel count alone does not show how reliably a camera will capture them. We compare specifications and offers; we do not claim hands-on camera testing.

Leave room for your files and your plans

Check the storage used on your current phone. Offline films, games and video can take space you will want later. Our storage guide explains the trade-offs without assuming everyone needs the largest option.

Check the exact SIM format and software support. A phone you expect to keep for several years should have enough support remaining for that plan.

Compare two realistic choices

Pick one model that covers your essentials and one alternative. Use phone comparison to see the differences, then compare the seller, condition and total price. Spending more only makes sense if the difference matters to you.

Start with phones under £250, iPhones or Samsung phones.
