128 GB or 256 GB: choosing phone storage

Look at the space you use today and what you plan to keep on the phone.

Storage holds your apps, photos, videos and downloaded files. Memory, often called RAM, helps the phone run apps. An 8 GB RAM / 128 GB phone has 128 GB of storage, not 8 GB.

Check your current phone

Open its storage settings and see what is taking up space. If you are already close to 128 GB, another 128 GB phone may mean regular clearing out. Video, games and offline media are common reasons to want more room.

Allow for the software

The advertised capacity is not all available for your files. The operating system and built-in software use some of it, and updates need room too.

Compare the same phone

Use the storage filter on a phone’s offer page. Compare the same condition and seller terms. A cheaper 256 GB refurbished phone and a new 128 GB phone are different choices, even if the model name matches.

Cloud storage may help, but it can carry an ongoing cost and some files need a connection. Think about how you use your phone away from Wi-Fi.

Check what you will bring across

Look at photos, videos, downloaded music, offline maps and games separately. You may be able to remove things you no longer use, but check that anything important is backed up before deleting it. Leave space for new files and updates.

If you are moving from another phone, use our transfer checklist. Compare the same storage size when checking phone prices.
