You can change mobile provider without changing the number friends, family and your bank use. Get the new plan ready, then ask the new provider to move the number.
Check the cost of leaving first
Text INFO to 85075 to check your contract status. Leaving during a minimum term can bring an early termination charge. Check any separate phone repayment agreement too: moving your SIM does not mean the phone is paid off.
Use a PAC to keep the number
- Text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to keep. The code lasts 30 days.
- Check the reply for leaving charges, then give the code to your new provider before it expires.
- Your new provider arranges the move. Ofcom says it must complete the switch within one working day.
For a family account with several numbers, request the code online or by calling your provider. If you want a new number instead, text STAC to 75075. Ofcom explains both routes.
Keep both SIMs until the move works
Follow the new provider’s activation and transfer instructions. Let it handle the switch rather than separately closing the old service first. Keep Wi-Fi available and allow for a short interruption. Avoid choosing a transfer day when you rely on your phone for travel or an important call.
Once the move is complete, test an outgoing call, an incoming call, a text and mobile data. Check the final bill from the old provider. Keep the confirmation until any remaining charges are settled.
Choose coverage before price
A cheaper SIM is only useful if it works where you need it. Check home, work and your usual routes, then compare UK SIM plans. Moving a number and moving your photos or apps are separate jobs; use our new phone checklist if you are changing the handset too.
